Get Your Landscape Ready For Autumn!

We are almost into one of the most beautiful seasons of the year: Autumn.

Not only will there be a beautiful show of colors from all of your plant material but the crispness of the season will lead our landscapes into a dormancy state. Taking advantage of a few transitional maintenance ideas now can ensure that your fall maintenance program will keep your landscape healthy through the winter.

This would be a great time of year to fertilize your lawn before your last winterizer fertilizer application in October. Don't use a lawn fertilizer with too much nitrogen and this is a good time of year to use a fertilizer with some iron in it (make sure and sweep it off your concrete areas). As the weather cools in September, you should be able to cut the frequency of your irrigation system down to 2 or 3 times per week. If there are some patches in your lawn that need some help, seed or resod those areas while you are able to get the roots established.

You should start getting your established plant material into a transitional state by watering it less this September and October. As soon as the temperatures start dropping, drop your plant material zones to just once or twice per week. If you haven't done so already, make sure you have pruned all of the dead material out of your trees and shrubs and check for any possible insect or disease damage. You can't do anything about it now, but take note so you can apply something to the plant material first thing in spring. Don't fertilize any of your plants.

As always, thank you for your kind referrals and we wish you and your families the best. Enjoy your BarBQs and the warm weather while you can!
