Spring Is Around The Corner!

We are only a few weeks away from one of the greatest transitions of the seasons: Winter to Spring!

These are the times when we need to reflect on what we can do to make our spring landscape come out more aggressive — and what we can do NOW to make sure our maintenance time is kept to a minimum this year.

This is a great opportunity to clean out your plant material. The new growth has not started yet in your shrubs and you can easily get all of the dead leaves and trash away from the branches. Hire a company to do it if you don't want to do it yourselves. You will drastically cut down on weeds this spring.

Cut all of the tops off your established grasses to 6" above the grade. Plants will respond more rapidly in the spring if you cut out all the deadwood. Apply this principle to all of your plant material. Make sure it is completely dead. The new branches will be springy and contain buds.

Start watering your plants more frequently on warmer days above 40 degrees based on how much precipitation we get from our spring rains. The roots need the extra water.

Your crocus bulbs should be coming up about now to give us a colorful taste of what's to come — you did plant some last Autumn, right?

Stay tuned: our next newsletter will be oriented to "Being Green" in your landscape and what you can do to be xeriscape and sustainable.

Until then, remember: all of the precipitation this next month will make our landscape more green! Please be safe on the roads with the wet snow mix we typically get this time of year.
