Why should we landscape in winter?
Many people ask me why they should landscape in late fall and winter.
One of the best reasons is savings. Since hardscape materials, irrigations parts and plant material always tend to have price increases in mid February, you are able to lock in your price before these go in effect. Additionally, many contractors always discount prices in winter to provide uninterrupted employment for thier valued employees.
Another good reason is that the plant material does so well when planted while dormant. We have done studies and it clearly shows that plants fare better in the fall and winter. Obviously, some delicate perennials and shrubs are best left for spring.
Finally, it is more convenient to landscape your new home in the winter so you do not have to deal with the mess created by mud tracked in by people and pets. You can also lose quite a bit of your grade due to erosion. Contractors can install everything except for sod installation and place an erosion mat over the grass areas. Then, in spring, they can install your sod and soil preparation within a day or two and you are done!
